Penny Riley-Smith           My Work

Much of my work is kiln-fired glass, a satisfyingly versatile way to produce images, sculpture, and tableware.

Glass is well suited to celebrating the wildlife of the UK.  Working with glass that is glossy or textured, translucent or opalescent, even glass with a metallic sheen to reflect the lustre on a bird’s feathers, is one of the challenges of representing the diversity to be found in the avian kingdom.

Sometimes the message is more sombre, as when I examine the damage we are doing to our rivers and oceans, but I also use glass to express some of the joyful imagery gathered during my travels, from the orange and green of the Australian outback to the intricate indigo textile patterns of India.
